'Dignity And Wisdom': Chief Justice Praises Gascon After Final High-Court Case

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 16 May, 2019 07:49 PM

OTTAWA — Supreme Court Justice Clement Gascon received a standing ovation today after hearing his final case on the high court.

Gascon graciously thanked his family and colleagues, saying it is an immense privilege to be a judge.

Gascon, 58, recently announced plans to retire and acknowledged this week he has long struggled with anxiety and depression.

He says he suffered a panic attack before he briefly went missing May 8.

Chief Justice Richard Wagner told the crowded courtroom today that Gascon has served Canadians with dignity and wisdom, and that his commitment and friendship will be missed.

Gascon retires Sept. 15 but will have a say in judgments on cases that have already been heard for up to six months after that.
