Police in Central Saanich are investigating the death of a woman who was killed by a pickup truck as she was taking part in an organized bicycle race yesterday.

Police say the woman, who was in her late 40s, was racing in the Tripleshot Cross Fondo when she was struck at an intersection on Central Saanich Road, north of Victoria. 

The woman died of her injuries in hospital.

Police say the driver remained at the scene, is co-operating, and alcohol has been ruled out as a factor, while the cause remains under investigation.

Statistics Canada says the fertility rate in Canada reached an all-time low in 2023, and the lowest rate was recorded in British Columbia.
