Crown Wants Guy Turcotte To Serve At Least 20 Years Before Parole Eligibility

Darpan News Desk IANS, 18 Dec, 2015 01:03 PM
SAINT-JEROME, Que. — Prosecutors want a former Quebec doctor convicted of murdering his two children to serve at least 20 years behind bars before being eligible to apply for parole.

The Crown made its case today at the sentencing hearing for Guy Turcotte, who was found guilty earlier this month of second-degree murder in the deaths of Olivier, 5, and Anne-Sophie, 3.

Earlier, Isabelle Gaston, Turcotte's ex-wife, delivered an emotional impact statement, telling Turcotte he'd broken her heart, but not her resolve.

A conviction on second-degree murder carries a sentence of life imprisonment but the court has some latitude on setting parole eligibility.

The minimum time to be served before being able to apply for parole is 10 years, while the maximum is 25 years.

The defence is now making its case to Quebec Superior Court Justice Andre Vincent.
