Crime rate continues to drop in Canada: Statistics Canada

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 23 Jul, 2014 11:27 AM
Statistics Canada is saying that the crime rate was lower last year and so was the severity of those criminal acts.

Police-reported Crime Severity Index fell by nine per cent in 2013 and apparently this was the tenth consecutive annual decline.

Crime Severity Index which measures the volume and severity of crime based on average prison sentences handed down for convictions, was 36 per cent lower in 2013 compared to a decade earlier.

Though most offences were down, an increase was observed in some other offences including extortion, identity theft, aggravated sexual assault, child pornography and sexual violations against children.

Victoria saw the biggest decline compared with 2012, with a decrease of 17 per cent.

Yukon and Newfoundland and Labrador witnessed slight increases in the severity of the crimes committed, whereas most provinces and territories recorded a decrease.

Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec and Manitoba witnessed the largest declines among the provinces and territories.
