Crews and Province keep an eye on wildfires

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 11 Jul, 2023 12:16 PM
  • Crews and Province keep an eye on wildfires

Wildfire crews and local governments are keeping a close watch on drought-stricken woodlands across B-C, as more lightning is forecast in many areas.

The wildfire service says 318 active fires are currently burning -- most of them in the Northwest and Prince George fire districts where thousands of lightning strikes hit during a recent storm.

Several evacuation orders and alerts were upgraded yesterday -- including an evacuation order for a fire on the eastern edge of the Village of Burns Lake, another order covering part of the north shore of Francois Lake and an alert affecting 160 parcels of land in the Teepee Lake area west of Quesnel.

Meanwhile, in Yukon, fire crews are managing to keep a blaze just outside Whitehorse away from homes along the south side of the Alaska Highway, but the wildfire is moving toward the Ibis (EYE'-bis) Valley and has grown to nearly eight square kilometres.

The head of the Public Service Alliance of Canada says the government has yet to change their position on wage demands. National President Chris Aylward says his workers deserve a raise that keeps up with inflation and the current offer of nine per cent over three years doesn't cut it.
