Conservatives Promise $700-Milllion For Light-Rail Transit In Surrey

The Canadian Press, 28 Sep, 2015 11:58 AM
  • Conservatives Promise $700-Milllion For Light-Rail Transit In Surrey
SURREY, B.C. — The Conservative party has promised $700 million for light-rail transit in Surrey, B.C.

Industry Minister James Moore and candidate Dianne Watts made the announcement Monday morning while party leader Stephen Harper prepared for a debate on foreign issues in Toronto.

Harper was expected to make the transit announcement in Surrey earlier this month but it was derailed by the Syrian refugee crisis.

Watts, the former mayor of Surrey, said light-rail transit will spur economic growth as congestion is eased and products get to market faster.

The Conservatives say they would contribute up to one third of the costs for a proposed light-rail project spanning 28 kilometres.
