Congratulations pour in from political leaders in BC on King Charles coronation

Political leaders in B-C have issued congratulatory statements for the coronation of King Charles, with changes to the province's administrative Great Seal.

B-C Premier David Eby says in a statement that the coronation of Charles marks the first crowning of a Canadian head-of-state in seven decades.

The event marks --quote-- "an opportunity to reflect on the common interests and values we share."

B-C Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin and Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai have also issued congratulatory statements for the coronation, which took place at Westminster Abbey in London.

"On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to congratulate Their Majesties on this auspicious occasion. I look forward to continuing to support our Sovereign in his important work.

The Union of B-C Indian Chiefs, however, criticized the ceremony, saying it --quote-- "cannot participate in or celebrate a ceremony or system that has suppressed and oppressed First Nations rights in Canada."

B.C. to have a reconciliation holiday in September

Labour Minister Harry Bains introduced a bill in the legislature today, saying the holiday will be observed this September and every Sept. 30 afterwards. He says the B.C. holiday follows the federal government's decision in 2021 to declare Sept. 30 a national truth and reconciliation holiday for its workers.
