Commercial Truck Blitz Underway In Vancouver As More Than Half Fail Safety Check

  • Commercial Truck Blitz Underway In Vancouver As More Than Half Fail Safety Check
Vancouver Police say more than half of the commercial vehicles checked during a recent road-safety blitz were so badly maintained they were immediately ordered off the road.

The department says in a news release that 75 trucks were checked Tuesday and 40 had to be taken out of service while drivers of the remaining 35 rigs were ticketed for at least one infraction.

Sgt. Jason Robillard says the total value of fines issued during the inspections amounted to $11,761.

He says further inspections will be conducted around the city this week as police work to improve road safety by identifying unsafe commercial vehicles.

The department's commercial vehicle unit, other local police and the Provincial Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement team are carrying out the campaign.

Mechanical deficiencies, load security, bald tires, brakes, windshields, suspension, and steering components are a few of the problem areas likely to be closely checked.

"The vast majority of commercial vehicles are operated safely and are well maintained. Inspectors will be focusing on trucks that are in an obvious state of disrepair and will be flagging them in for further inspection," the release says.
