ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A major shortage of food bank donations has inspired the City of St. John's in Newfoundland to collect contributions door to door.
Mayor Dennis O'Keefe has urged residents in this capital city of just more than 100,000 residents to do their bit for those in need.
He is asking them to leave bags of non-perishable food marked with an "F" on door knobs and front stoops to be picked up by city workers.
Volunteers are also helping to collect donations from a different ward each day this week until all five wards have been covered.
The local Community Food Sharing Association says stocks dwindled after a yearly Canada Post canned food drive was cancelled due to staff cuts.
