Chemical Spill At Kronos Plant Near Montreal, Evacuations

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 21 Mar, 2015 05:18 PM
MONTREAL — An industrial accident on Montreal's south shore has caused a toxic chemical leak.

Fifteen homes and three factories have been evacuated on Saturday after 40 tons of titanium chloride was released into the atmosphere.

It happened at the Kronos factory in Varennes, which produces titanium pigment for industrial paint.

A spokesman for the city said that as of 1:30 p.m. the leak had yet to be contained.

Crews are working to shut down the leak.

No injuries have been reported and the factory workers are said to be safe.

Officials say there was no risk to human health for those more than 400 metres away.

Environment Canada has sent an emergency crew to the site.
