Charges laid against Abbotsford and Calgary residents after a series of robberies

  • Charges laid against Abbotsford and Calgary residents after a series of robberies

Charges have been laid against a 22-year-old Abbotsford resident and a 21-year-old Calgary resident after a joint investigation into a robbery series that occurred in Surrey, Langley, and Abbotsford.

Between October 2, 2021 and October 11, 2021, three robberies in three different jurisdictions occurred.

Investigators from the Surrey RCMP Robbery Unit, the Langley RCMP and the Abbotsford Police Department conducted a coordinated investigation in order to advance all three investigations, with Surrey taking the lead. The investigations included robberies that are alleged to have occurred at the following locations:
 

  • October 2, 2021, at a cell phone store located in the 16000-block of 24 Avenue, Surrey, BC;
  • October 10, 2021, at cell phone store located in the 20100-block of 88th Avenue, Langely, BC; and
  • October 11, 2021, at a pharmacy in the 3600-block of Townline road, Abbostford, BC.

On November 18, 2021, search warrants were executed at a residence in Abbotsford as well as a residence in Calgary with the assistance of the Calgary Police Service. One suspect was arrested during the execution of the search warrant in Calgary.

On December 17, 2021, the BC Prosecution Service laid 15 charges against two suspects and warrants were issued for their arrests.

While none of the employees sustained significant physical injures, these type of crimes can have a lasting emotional impact, says Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Corporal Vanessa Munn. We appreciate the assistance and cooperation of our policing partners in Langley, Abbotsford, and Calgary, for helping advance these multi-jurisdictional robbery investigations.

Erat Odongi, 22-years old, of Abbotsford, BC, has been charged with two counts of Robbery and two counts of Forcible Confinement. Abbotsford Police Department located and arrested Erat Odongi on his outstanding warrants on December 20, 2021.

Jaden Kahnapace-Newton, 21-years old, of Calgary, AB, has been charged with three counts of Robbery, three counts of Forcible Confinement, three counts of Breach of Release order, Trafficking Property obtained by a Crime, and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime.

Surrey RCMP has arrested a 28-year old man, who is alleged to have robbed the same Whalley bank twice, only weeks apart. On October 16, 2021, Surrey RCMP received a report of a bank robbery in 10200-block of King George Boulevard. The suspect fled with cash prior to police arrival.
