Ceremony Honours 4 Airmen Whose Bodies Found Decades After Takeoff Near Victoria

The Canadian Press , 10 Nov, 2014 02:48 PM
VICTORIA — Four airmen have been laid to rest at a military service in Victoria — more than 70 years after they disappeared in their aircraft.

A single coffin draped with the Canadian flag contained their remains.

It was lowered to the airmen's final resting place at a ceremony attended by family members and members of the military in full regalia.

Sgt. William Baird from Calgary and three others from England left Patricia Bay near Victoria on Oct. 30, 1942 and never returned.

The wreckage of their twin-engine Avro Anson was discovered in October 2013 by a forest crew near Port renfrew on the west coast of Vancouver island.

Military officers were able to confirm the identities of the Flyers and their plane.
