CBC Says An Average Of Just Over Four Million Tuned In For Hip Broadcast

The Canadian Press, 22 Aug, 2016 12:02 PM
TORONTO — CBC's broadcast of Saturday night's Tragically Hip concert averaged just over four million viewers, according to the network.

CBC says an average of 4.04 million people tuned in on TV or via livestreaming.

The Kingston, Ont., concert is expected to be the last one for the band after frontman Gord Downie revealed earlier this year he has terminal brain cancer.

In addition to those watching at home, many fans held viewing parties across Canada.

Some 11.7 million Canadians tuned in on television, radio and digital at some point during the nearly three-hour broadcast, CBC said in a release Sunday night, citing Numeris.

The men's gold-medal hockey game at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics is considered to be the most-watched broadcast ever in Canada.

Numeris said at the time that it drew an average of 16.6 million viewers, about double the number of people who tune into most Super Bowls.
