Canadian Nurse Fears Nepal's Quake Victims Forgotten As Need Remains Dire

  • Canadian Nurse Fears Nepal's Quake Victims Forgotten As Need Remains Dire
KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A nurse practitioner from Williams Lake, B.C., hopes Canadians haven't forgotten the victims of two massive earthquakes in Nepal.

A quake measuring 7.8 struck Nepal on April 25, followed by a powerful 7.3 jolt on May 12.

The United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs says more than 8,600 people died, nearly 17,000 were injured and almost half a million homes were destroyed.

Patrice Gordon has travelled to the disaster area to work with a Red Cross emergency field hospital and says one in four people remains homeless.

She says there's a desperate lack of clean water and adequate sanitation during the monsoon season and it is difficult to believe that for the rest of the world, Nepal, in her words, has "fallen off the table."

Gordon was recently awarded a health care hero award for her time Africa, where she helped treat patients during the ebola outbreak.
