Canada’s quarterly population growth hits slowest pace since early 2022

Statistics Canada estimates the country's population grew by 176,699 people between July 1 and Oct. 1, marking the slowest pace of growth since the first quarter of 2022.

Canada’s population is estimated to have reached roughly 41.5 million people.

International migration continues to account for most of the increase in population.

The federal government tightened up temporary foreign worker program rules and capped study permits after facing significant political scrutiny for the impact of strong population growth on housing and services.

The report says the three-month period saw the lowest net increase in the number of non-permanent residents of any third quarter since 2015, excluding the third quarter of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a sharp decrease.

About 80,000 people moved between provinces in the third quarter, marking a decrease in interprovincial migration that is closer to pre-pandemic levels.

3 arrested in Whalley stabbing

Mounties in Surrey say three people have been arrested in the stabbing of a woman in the Whalley neighbourhood earlier this month. They say the assault happened around 12:30 a-m on October 6th, and the R-C-M-P released photos and videos of the suspects 10 days later.

Weather warnings issued as atmospheric river approaches B.C. coast

Environment Canada has issued several rainfall warnings for British Columbia, covering much of Vancouver Island and the coastal regions as the first atmospheric river of the season approaches. It says heavy rain is expected to reach inland sections of the central coast that will intensify throughout the day before peaking this afternoon, bringing up to 70 millimetres.

14 arrested in Whalley's drug trade

Police in Surrey say they have arrested 14 people in an enforcement operation targeting an open drug trade in the city’s Whalley area. Mounties say the operation took place on October 3rd, and also resulted in the seizure of 16 weapons, including a pellet gun, brass knuckles, batons, bear spray and knives.
