  • Calm Winds Assist Crews Battling Wildfire On West Side Of Okanagan Lake

KELOWNA, B.C. — Operators of a resort and two camps on the west side of Okanagan Lake northwest of Kelowna, B.C., can relax, as an evacuation alert has been lifted for the area.

Calm winds and cooler temperatures helped crews get a handle on the nearly three hectare Cinnabar Creek wildfire early Thursday morning.

The Central Okanagan Regional District imposed the evacuation alert on the Lake Okanagan Resort, Camp Owaissi and Camp Mewata on Wednesday afternoon shortly after flames broke out.

The fire also forced closure of a section of Westside Road from Bear Creek to Fintry and the regional district said single lane alternating traffic would resume at 6:30 Thursday morning.

But the reopening was delayed and official were expecting traffic to begin moving again through the fire zone by 8:30 a.m.

Motorists were advised to check DriveBC for the latest updates on travel in the area.
