Matthew de Grood, accused in Calgary's worst mass killing will be undergoing psychiatric assessment in order to determine if he can be found criminally responsible if convicted. 
 
The 22-year-old made his first appearance in court Tuesday since the stabbing rampage on April 15 that left five young individuals dead. His previous appearances had been via closed-circuit television. 
 
De Grood, son of a veteran Calgary police officer will make another appearance in court on August 29.
 
Furthermore, the court has set a preliminary hearing for next March.
 
It is not clear what motivated De Grood to execute the attack. He was invited to the party April 15 where he mingled with the young crowd before carrying out the attack.
 
Zackariah Rathwell, 21; Lawrence Hong, 27; Joshua Hunter, 23; Jordan Segura, 22; and Kaiti Perras, 23 were killed in the attack.
