Calgary Police Say Crown Has Stayed Criminal Charges Against Three Officers

The Canadian Press, 01 Jun, 2018 01:19 PM
CALGARY — The Calgary Police Service says the Alberta Crown has stayed criminal charges against three veteran officers.

In August 2017, Sgt. Mark Schwartzand Det. Paul Rubner were charged with kidnapping and assault, and Det. Reagan Hossack was charged with kidnapping.

The charges involved a man who police believed had information in a 2010 case of an at-risk girl who they thought was being sexually exploited.

A fourth officer involved in the investigation came forward and accused his colleagues in the vice unit of bringing the man into an unmarked police car, driving him around for about 20 minutes, and assaulting him.

Police say the man never filed a complaint and died a few months later.

The officer who made the allegations has since resigned from the police service.

"Although the charges were recommended at the time by the Crown, they have further reviewed the file and all related criminal charges have now been stayed," police said in a release Thursday night.

"No further comment is available at this time."

Calgary police say the three officers remain on duty.
