    The City of Surrey says it's boosting bylaw patrols as Halloween and Diwali celebrations fall on the same day this year. 

    The city says the patrols will focus on fireworks regulations. 

    Mayor Brenda Locke says the city has upped the fines for illegal fireworks use, and says both Halloween and Diwali celebrations should be both fun and safe. 

    The city says officers will be fanning out across Surrey for fireworks hot spots, and last year officers went to more than 500 locations and doled out about 150 tickets.

    A statement from the First Nation outside Vernon on Thursday says BC Wildfire Service personnel were working to maintain guards around the seven-square-kilometre Hullcar Mountain blaze while helicopters douse it with water. The blaze is one of nine wildfires of note in the province, meaning the fires are either highly visible or pose a threat to public safety and infrastructure.

    The British Columbia government has appointed Dr. Jatinder Baidwan as the province's new chief coroner following the retirement of Lisa Lapointe earlier this year.     Parks Canada says parts of the Icefields Parkway are expected to reopen Friday thanks to recent progress made in wildfire prevention in Jasper National Park. Officials say the road is to open between Lake Louise, Alta., in Banff National Park, and the Athabasca Glacier area of the Columbia Icefield.
