  • Burnaby RCMP investigate 2 early morning shootings

On August 17th, 2020, at around 12:30 a.m., the Burnaby RCMP responded to multiple reports of shots being fired in the area of North Road and Cottonwood Avenue in Burnaby.

A 21-year-old Vancouver man was located suffering from several gun shot wounds. The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for serious injuries. Witnesses report the gunfire to have come from a white coupe vehicle. At this time, the victim is not cooperating with the police investigation.

At around 2:30 a.m., the Burnaby RCMP responded to a second incident where multiple reports of shots being fired in the 3200 block of Smith Avenue in Burnaby. Burnaby frontline officers responded and located a white crossover type vehicle fleeing the scene.

The Burnaby RCMP engaged in a pursuit with the vehicle, accelerating to speeds exceeding 160 km/hr. Fearing for public safety, the pursuit was ended.

A short time later, a 25-year-old Surrey man arrived at the hospital having suffered from several gun shot wounds. The man was treated for serious injuries and he too is not cooperating with the police investigation.

The Burnaby RCMP Serious Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate both shootings and determine whether they are related to one another, said Cpl. Brett Cunningham of the Burnaby RCMP.

Police suspect both shootings to be related to the Lower Mainland gang conflict and we are seeking witnesses to come forward and help us end this string of violence.

Police are continuing to speak to witnesses in order to get a firm description of those involved in both shooting incidents
