Bulk Carrier Tundra Runs Aground Near Summerstown Shortly After Seaway Reopened

The Canadian Press, 21 Jun, 2015 01:03 PM
SUMMERSTOWN, Ont. — There has been a second mishap on the St. Lawrence seaway this week as the bulk carrier Tundra ran aground only hours after the seaway reopened following an incident with a passenger cruise ship.

The Transportation Safety Board is assessing the incident concerning the Tundra, which ran aground at 1 a.m. Sunday morning near Summerstown, Ontario.

A TSB spokesman said the Tundra has been investigated before, following another grounding incident in 2012.

In that case, the report found fatigue and ineffective communication between the pilot and bridge officers to have been contributing factors.

The causes of the current incident are under investigation.

Navigation on the St. Lawrence Seaway had resumed about nine hours earlier after being closed for 42 hours following an incident with the cruise ship Saint Laurent, which struck a lock Thursday evening.
