Body of man found near missing Ontario journalist's car, no ID released yet

Darpan News Desk Canadian Press, 20 Aug, 2014 10:43 AM
Police say they've found a body of a man not far from where the vehicle of a missing Ontario journalist was located.

They aren't releasing the identity of the man, saying next of kin have yet to be notified and a post mortem has yet to be carried out.

The body was found in a rural area outside Brockville, Ont., near where Steve Pettibone's car was found abandoned in a field Tuesday night.

The discovery of the car prompted an extensive search of the area that involved officers on ATVs, a canine unit and a police helicopter.

"We've located the body of an adult male," said Const. Joel Doiron. "It was in the area where the vehicle was, the general search area."

Pettibone was last seen at 7:30 a.m. on Monday when he left his home in Belleville, Ont., to go to work at the Brockville Recorder and Times, where he is the sports editor.

The newspaper's managing editor, Derek Gordanier, wrote a column appealing for assistance in locating the 39-year-old journalist, saying the disappearance was "out of character."
