  • BC Prosecution approves charges against Surrey RCMP officer Jagjeet Bassan

The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) announced today that a charge of assault causing bodily harm has been approved against Surrey RCMP Cst. Jagjeet Bassan in connection with their involvement in an on-duty incident which allegedly occurred on June 4, 2021 in Surrey.

An information charging Cst. Bassan with one count of assault causing bodily harm contrary to section 267(b) of the Criminal Code was sworn on June 2, 2022, under Provincial Court file number 249208.

The first appearance on this matter is scheduled for July 5, 2022, in Surrey Provincial Court.

The charges were approved by an experienced Crown Counsel with no prior or current connection with the officer.

On Sunday, May 22, 2022 at 11:26 p.m., Burnaby RCMP frontline officers came upon a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle in the 6600 block of Hastings Street in Burnaby. A 2019 white Ford Edge was travelling east-bound on Hastings Street when it struck a lone pedestrian crossing the roadway.

Upon attendance, Frontline officers spoke with the adult female resident, who reported that she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown male suspect. The female victim was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
