BC: Okanagan Wildfire Prompts Local State Of Emergency Near Peachland

The Canadian Press Darpan, 08 Aug, 2014 11:19 AM
PEACHLAND, B.C. - An active wildfire is threatening one home and has prompted a local state of emergency near the Okanagan community of Peachland, B.C.

Flames were reported Thursday afternoon on Drought Hill, just north of Highway 97C, between Peachland and West Kelowna, on the west side of Okanagan Lake.

More than two dozen firefighters, bolstered by crews from Peachland and West Kelowna, are assigned to the blaze and many remained at the scene overnight.

One home has been ordered evacuated as the fire scorched an estimated 30 hectares, about one-third of a square kilometre, of grass and open timber.

One westbound lane of Highway 97C has also been closed four kilometres west of the junction with Highway 97, and the public is urged to use this route only if necessary.

Forestry officials say the cause of the Drought Hill fire is under investigation but it is suspected to have been sparked by humans. (CKIZ)
