B.C. Man To Be Sentenced Today For Killing Brother In Alcohol-fuelled Stabbing

The Canadian Press, 22 Jan, 2015 01:44 PM
PENTICTON, B.C. — A B.C. Supreme Court judge is expected to sentence a 26-year-old man this morning for killing his brother with a knife four years ago.

Kyle Louie earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the alcohol-fuelled stabbing death of his 21-year-old brother, Reece Louie, near Oliver, B.C., on Feb. 19, 2011.

Crown counsel John Swanson says Reece Louie suffered multiple stab wounds in an altercation at their father’s house, where they were both living at the time.

The court heard a breathalyzer reading taken several hours after his arrest indicated Kyle Reece had a blood-alcohol-level of .30, almost four times the legally impaired limit.

Crown and defence lawyers have jointly proposed a 75-month sentence and that the accused be declared a long-term offender and subject to a further five-and-a-half years of supervision.

Given 69 months’ enhanced credit for the 46 months he has already served in custody, Kyle Louie would have six months jail time remaining.

"We have here a very tragic situation in which he killed his best friend, essentially, in a blackout," says defence lawyer Tom Arbogast, adding his client has absolutely no memory of what had happened. (Penticton Herald)
