A man has been charged with killing his estranged wife in Montrose, B.C.

Police in the West Kootenay community say officers were dispatched Monday after a report of a man assaulting a woman on the front lawn of a home.

A statement from the RCMP's southeast district major crime unit says officers and paramedics found Lindsay Danchella suffering from "significant injuries."

The Mounties say Danchella was taken to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, where she died soon after arriving.

They say her estranged husband, 46-year-old Donald Danchella, was arrested at the scene, then charged with second-degree murder.

RCMP say he appeared before a judge on Tuesday.
