B.C. Ferries Crew Rescues Kayaker From Water Off Vancouver Island

The Canadian Press, 20 Jun, 2015 01:01 PM
  • B.C. Ferries Crew Rescues Kayaker From Water Off Vancouver Island
COURTENAY, B.C. — B.C. Ferries says a crew from one of its ships acted quickly to save the life of a kayaker lost in the water off Vancouver Island.

The Canadian Coast Guard asked for help at about 9:45 p.m. Friday from the MV Quinitsa with a search and rescue operation for a female kayaker.

The MV Quinitsa operates on a route from Denman Island to Buckley Bay, and at the time it was called, it was docked at Denman Island unloading passengers and vehicles.

The ferry's rescue boat was launched at about 9:50 p.m. and the crew saved the woman from the water about one nautical mile north of the Buckley Bay terminal.

B.C. Ferries says the woman was transferred to RCMP and an ambulance on shore.

Spokeswoman Deborah Marshall says the Canadian Coast Guard contacted B.C. Ferries later in the evening to thank the crew for an excellent, swift response and credited them with saving the woman's life.
