B.C. Doctor, Geoffrey Harding, Stabbed To Death At His Bahamian Vacation Home

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 06 Apr, 2015 04:07 PM

CHETWYND, B.C. — A B.C. doctor who was stabbed to death in the Bahamas is being remembered as a family patriarch and a man who made many medical contributions in the province.

Police in the Bahamas say 88-year-old Geoffrey Harding was found dead by a handyman in his home about noon last Thursday.

Stephen Dean with the Royal Bahamas Police Force says officers arrested a 43-year-old local man shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday.

A relative who last saw Harding surrounded by loved ones at a Christmas reunion says Harding helped build the first medical clinic in Chetwynd, a tiny community in B.C.'s northeast.

Chetwynd Mayor Merlin Nichols says Harding was well-respected and delivered many babies in the town before he left two decades ago to work in the Vancouver area.

Merlin says Harding spent much of his winters at a home in the Bahamas and returned to Chetwynd during the summer, where he was often seen relaxing by the lake.

Two of the man's daughters and their husbands have flown south for his cremation later this week.
