B.C. court imposes house arrest on human smuggler

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 03 Aug, 2021 01:52 PM
  • B.C. court imposes house arrest on human smuggler

A British Columbia court has sentenced a Calgary man to three months house arrest and a 15-month conditional sentence for human smuggling.

The Canada Border Services Agency says in a news release that a B.C. Supreme Court judge in New Westminster sentenced 47-year-old Ismail Nababteh last month.

He was convicted of facilitating, for profit, the entry of a foreign national across the Canada/U.S. border in July 2017.

It's the man's second conviction for human smuggling.

Canada border services says at the time of the 2017 smuggling incident he was on bail awaiting trial on separate human smuggling charges.

In that incident, Nababteh was convicted of smuggling three people into Canada and was sentenced to just under 6 months in jail.
