B.C. Children's Ministry In Line For Budget Boost, Says Finance Minister

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 15 Feb, 2017 01:31 PM
VICTORIA — British Columbia's finance minister says the Children and Family Development Ministry will receive a financial boost in next week's budget.

Mike de Jong isn't providing details but he says recent reports have called for sweeping changes in the ministry's operations that require additional funding.

The ministry has been at the centre of several reports that have been critical of the child-welfare system.

The most recent focused on 18-year-old Alex Gervais, who was in government care when he took his own life on Sept. 18, 2015.

A report by former ministry official Bob Plecas in December 2015 called for an overhaul of the department, saying it lacks leadership, accountability and proper funding.
