Alberta: New city app helps Edmontonians sort out wildflowers from weeds

The Canadian Press , 13 Aug, 2014 10:48 PM
EDMONTON - Want to know if that pretty purple blossom is a wildflower or a weed? There's an app for that.

The City of Edmonton has introduced an app called Alberta Weed Spotter which lists all 75 invasive species that are regulated under Alberta’s Weed Control Act.

Daniel Laubhann with the city says invasive species spread quickly in urban centres and public awareness is vital to minimize the number of new invasive species and reduce the spread of existing ones.

Laubhann says the app contains pictures of weeds separated into different categories and will help you identify them and accurately report it to weed managers.

Currently it’s available for iPads and iPhones only.

But the city is planning to get the Android version developed over the winter months and have it available for the next growing season.
