Alberta medical examiner sues province, claims political interference

EDMONTON — Alberta's former chief medical examiner is suing the province, claiming political interference in her job and overpayment to funeral homes.

Dr. Anny Sauvageau (SOH'-vah-zhoh) alleges her office was pressured to top up a body transportation contract with funeral homes by $3 million to appease "the rural vote."

She says she also received several complaints about funeral homes, including how some double-billed her office and the families of deceased persons.

She says she was told of one body that was transported in the back of a pickup truck.

The lawsuit says Sauvageau brought her concerns to justice officials and the premier, but nothing was done and her contract was terminated.

The suit has not been proven in court and the government has yet to respond.
