Alberta Government Says Insurance For Ride-Sharing Companies Coming Later

The Canadian Press, 29 Feb, 2016 01:42 PM
EDMONTON — The Alberta government has approved insurance for ride-sharing companies like Uber, but it's not available yet.

Transportation Minister Brian Mason says the insurance likely won't be ready until June or July.

He also says the province will require ride-for-hire drivers to have a Class 4 driver's licence, which is a commercial licence, and get a criminal record check.

Edmonton became the first jurisdiction earlier this year to legalize the new industry, and a bylaw comes into effect Tuesday.

Calgary city council also recently passed a bylaw which could start in April.

Uber said on the weekend it would stop operating in Alberta unless the province made insurance available and allowed drivers to have a regular Class 5 licence.
