The Canadian Press, 18 Aug, 2015 12:33 PM
OSOYOOS, B.C. — Police say a 12-year-old Calgary girl drowned in a British Columbia lake while walking in shallow water.

RCMP say she was on a sandbar at Osoyoos Lake when waves caused her to lose her footing slip into the water.

The girl's friend tried to help her, but she went under.

Police say the girl, who was camping at Haynes Point Provincial Park with her family, could not swim and was not wearing a life-jacket.

Boaters, the RCMP and firefighters searched the area and found her body in about three meters of water about 40 minutes later, but she could not be resuscitated.
