  • Alberta Brings In Guidelines For Schools To Address LGBTQ Issues
EDMONTON — Alberta's education minister has released guidelines for school boards dealing with LGBTQ students, including how they are allowed to dress, play sports and which washroom they can use.
 
David Eggen calls it an important step as school boards draft policies and regulations tailored to their own regions.
 
The province's 61 school boards must submit their drafts to the province by the end of March.
 
The guidelines say transgender students should be allowed to use the washroom of their choice and can dress in a manner consistent with their identity.
 
It also says students can participate in sports on teams that reflect whether they are or see themselves as boys or girls.
 
The School Act already dictates that schools must create safe and caring environments that respect diversity.
