Alaskan wins annual Yukon Quest dog sled race in nine days, 12 hours, 49 minutes

    WHITEHORSE — A resident of Alaska has won the annual Yukon Quest dog sled race.

    Brent Sass crossed the finish line in Fairbanks, Alaska, after travelling 1,600 kilometres from Whitehorse.

    An emotional Sass completed the trek at nearly 11 p.m. Monday night, after nine days, 12 hours and 49 minutes.

    He picks up over $24,000 U.S., along with four ounces of Klondike placer gold for being the first to reach Dawson City, Yukon, and as the winner of the race.

    Two-time defending champion Allen Moore finished an hour and 14 minutes after Sass to take second place.

    Ed Hopkins of Tagish, Yukon, is running third and expected to cross the line Tuesday night. (CKRW)
