Air Quality Warning Lifted After Blaze At Deep-Water Port In Squamish

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 20 Apr, 2015 10:06 AM
SQUAMISH, B.C. — British Columbia residents who live near a deep-water port that caught fire last week can breathe easy now that an air quality warning has been lifted.

District of Squamish officials say a burning dock at Squamish Terminals has now been 100 per cent contained and air quality is improving.

The blaze began Thursday night, causing dark and pungent smoke to billow from the north end of the facility on the north end of Howe Sound, about an hour's drive from Vancouver.

An air quality warning was in place for several days and advised people in the region with underlying medical conditions to avoid strenuous exercise and to stay indoors.

Residents are still being asked to limit water use, to avoid beaches close to the terminal and to avoid consuming garden vegetables as environmental testing continues.

Operations at the port have restarted, but officials say the work is isolated to the west dock and far removed from the damaged berth.
