  • Air Canada flight to Brazil diverted back to Toronto over security issue

An Air Canada flight flying to Brazil was diverted mid-way Wednesday after security issues at Pearson International airport.

Flight AC 090 had departed at 11:30 p.m. for Sao Paolo without conducting proper screening of a particular male passenger, said Peter Fitzpatrick, Air Canada spokesman.

"With the aircraft already in the air for four hours, we were notified of this and ordered by Transport Canada to have the aircraft return to Toronto," said Fitzpatrick.

The plane landed at 6:30 a.m. at Pearson with police and security officials surrounding the plane.

An hour later after landing, the man was tracked down and his boarding pass was shown as to be valid.

The man's identity was not disclosed. He was not arrested and will not be facing any charges, the police have stated.

Flight AC 090 again departed for Brazil mid-morning Thursday.
