Activists Want To See More Environment Talk In Saskatchewan Election

The Canadian Press, 28 Mar, 2016 11:12 AM
REGINA — Anyone in Ottawa who thinks the outcome of next week's Saskatchewan election might rid the country of a premier who opposes a carbon tax should think again.

Current Premier Brad Wall — one of the loudest voices against a national carbon tax — is riding high in the polls heading into Monday's election.

Even if the Opposition NDP pulls off a surprise win, Leader Cam Broten doesn't support an economy-wide carbon tax either.

Both Wall and Broten back the idea of a carbon levy on heavy emitters, where the money would go into a fund which can only be used to invest in clean technology.

The Sask. Party has introduced such legislation, but it's never been brought into force.

Environmentalists are upset that the environment hasn't played much of a role in the campaign and say politicians need to be better leaders on the issue.
