About 9,000 Out Of Homes In Northern Saskatchewan As Wildfires Continue To Burn

The Canadian Press, 06 Jul, 2015 01:23 PM
Emergency officials say the wildfire situation in northern Saskatchewan remains critical and about 9,000 people are out of their homes.

But there is some good news — wind is shifting flames away from the community of La Ronge, where residents were evacuated from on the weekend.

Fires and thick smoke forced others to start leaving their homes in the north more than a week ago.

About 1,000 military personnel are on their way to help fight the flames.

Six hundred soldiers are to receive basic firefighter training after they arrive and are expected to be on the ground Wednesday.

The others are to work in support roles, helping with deliveries and getting food and water to fire crews.
