A Whole Lot Of Chicken Feed: Rural Alberta Couple Hit $60M Lotto Jackpot

IANS, 05 Oct, 2017 04:01 PM
ST. ALBERT, Alta. — It's a whole lot more than chicken scratch for a rural Alberta couple who have won a $60-million Lotto Max jackpot.

Brett McCoy and Robin Walker say they found out they won the Sept. 22 draw while they were picking up chicken feed and treats for their kids at the McLeod Trading post in the hamlet of Peers.

Walker says that after she scanned the ticket, she ran outside to tell McCoy they'd won $60,000.

But the store clerk came after her and told her she should re-count the zeros on the ticket.

    The winning quick pick numbers were 2, 10, 37, 38, 43 and 47.

The couple say they are going to take some time to think about what they will do with their millions.

“It’s surreal,” Walker said as they were presented with a cheque Wednesday at the Western Canada Lottery Corp. office in St. Albert, Alta. “I was pretty excited when I thought it was $60,000.”

Added McCoy: “That would have taken care of a big chunk of our mortgage.”

Peers, which is about 180 kilometres west of Edmonton and had a population of 98 in 2016, appears to be a lucky place to buy lottery tickets.

In 2005, a couple won $8.2 million in a Lotto-649 draw and in 2007 another resident won $11 million on a Lotto 6-49 ticket.
