A dozen B.C. communities surpass daily heat record

A dozen communities in British Columbia surpassed their daily heat record Saturday, with the Quesnel area beating a record set in 1919.

Records from Environment Canada show temperatures hit 23 C on Saturday, exceeding the old record set for that day of 22.2 C.

They were recorded near Quesnel's airport south of Prince George.

In the Prince Rupert area, the high of 21.5 C replaces the old record of 18.3 set in 1943 and in Dawson Creek, the 25 C high beat the old record of 23.9 degrees set in 1952

In Port Hardy on Vancouver Island, a new record of 23.1 C surpassed the old record daily high of 18.3 set in 1964

Daily records were also set in Bella Bella, Burns Lake, Mackenzie, Pitt Meadows, Powell River, Prince George, Tatlayoko Lake and West Vancouver.

Mounties in southeastern British Columbia say the pilot of a small plane used Highway 6 as a runway after experiencing engine trouble. Police say a member of the public informed them on Tuesday that the plane was parked on the side of the highway, near Salmo.

Pedestrian dies in Abbotsford crash

Police in Abbotsford say a 35-year-old pedestrian died late last night after being hit by a vehicle. The death came just hours after an unrelated head-on crash involving two vehicles in the southwest corner of Abbotsford, leaving both drivers -- a 49-year-old man and 29-year-old woman -- with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has issued the "all clear" to residents affected by the Ross Moore Lake fire which was sparked by lightning nine weeks ago and scorched nearly 114 square kilometres before being held. The documents obtained by the B.C. office of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives show a registered professional engineer found numerous problems in 2018 with dikes protecting the community in the province's southern Interior. Dike maintenance is a municipal responsibility but with provincial oversight.
