7-Year Sentence For Toronto Man Ryan Belbin Who Abducted, Sexually Assaulted Child

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 26 Mar, 2015 12:21 PM

TORONTO — A Toronto man found guilty of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a young girl in 2011 has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Ryan Belbin was found guilty in October of breaking and entering, abduction of a person under 14, sexual assault and sexual interference.

He has been in custody since his arrest in 2012, which means he has two years and four months left to serve behind bars.

The victim, who cannot be publicly identified, had been visiting Toronto from Connecticut with relatives at the time of the assault.

Court heard the then-five-year-old was snatched from the home in the city's north end by a stranger around 3 a.m. on Boxing Day.

Family members who had found the girl within minutes of the abduction told investigators they saw a man running from the scene.

The judge presiding over the case says it remains unclear why Belbin committed the "extremely serious" offences.
