  • 7 youths charged in the second-degree murder of Grade 10 Edmonton student Karanveer Sahota

Edmonton Police have charged 7 Edmonton youths in relation to the homicide of 16 year old Karanveer Sahota.

On Thursday, April 21, 2022, 3 of the youths, a 17-year-old female and 2 males aged 15 and 16, were charged with second-degree murder.

The remaining 4 youths, 2, 14-year-old males and 2 males aged 15 and 16, were formally charged with second-degree murder on Friday.

The female youth is also facing a charge of obstruction.

Karanveer Sahota, a Grade 10 student at McNally High School, was waiting for a bus on the afternoon of April 8 when he was assaulted at around 2:44pm.

"Any loss of life is tragic, these were just high school youths that had a bit of a history of disagreeing with each other, but nothing to indicate this was gang-motivated or gang-related." -Supt. Shane Perka of the Edmonton Police Service's criminal investigations division.

Perka wouldn't say if the two groups attended different schools.

Six of the youths were initially charged with attempted murder following the stabbing April 8. A warrant on the same charge was issued for the seventh youth.

Their charges were all upgraded after the teen died in hospital on April 15 and an autopsy was completed Wednesday.

Sahota's autopsy revealed that the cause of death was a stab wound of the chest.

Sahota's family is in absolute shock over this tragic death.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up for Sahota.
