  • 4 passengers assaulted by drunken man on a BC Transit Bus, man charged with assault

On Sunday April 24th, at 4:18 pm, Abbotsford police responded to reports of an intoxicated, assaultive passenger on a BC Transit Bus which was proceeding westbound on Highway 1 at Whatcom Road. While police were en route, passengers on the bus stepped in and assisted with restraining the suspect until police arrived.

Upon police arrival, the suspect continued to resist which required additional officers to assist in his arrest. In total, four passengers were assaulted during the incident. All received minor injuries which did not require transport to the hospital.

45 year old David Allen Lucas of Surrey has now been charged with assault with a weapon and three counts of assault. Lucas has been released from custody on a series of court-ordered conditions.

“The AbbyPD and BC Transit personnel continue to work together to ensure that the transit system within the Abbotsford area remains safe for the public. Incidents like this are rare. We are grateful for the actions of these citizens who intervened, likely preventing further passengers from being injured,” says Constable Paul Walker.

Anyone who hasn’t spoken to the police who witnessed this incident is asked to contact AbbyPD investigators at 604-859-5225.

“How much longer?” The case of delays in BC’s healthcare system
While the pandemic has taken the major focus of the healthcare arena and has been using most of its resources, the system was already running beyond 100% pre-pandemic. While normal businesses may have responded to pandemic-related challenges by simply hiring more staff, the health care system was already maxed out and could not respond by just adding more resources than it could safely handle.
