A couple in India are devastated after finding out that their son, Kartik Vasudev who was only 21 was shot dead outside a skytrain station in Toronto. He was going to hop on the bus to head to his part-time job at a restaurant.

According to Toronto Police, Kartik Vasudev was shot several times at about 5 p.m. on Thursday at the entrance to the Sherbourne subway station, which is not far from the Indian Consulate in Toronto.

The family was able to confirm the death on Friday afternoon but don't know the motive behind the shooting.

Police are looking for a black male who was seen walking with a handgun from the crime scene.

The Indian High Commission in Toronto expressed grief over Vasduev's senseless death in a Twitter post.

Kartik was studying global management at Seneca University and was 1st year student.

In a statement, Seneca College said, "The Seneca community is saddened to hear of the tragic death of Kartik Vasudev, a first-semester Marketing Management student. Our thoughts are with Mr. Vasudev's family, friends and classmates. Counselling support is being made available to students and employees."

He had moved to Canada in January from Gahziabad in Delhi and was living with his cousin.

After he started college, he got a job at a restaurant in the Toronto Downtown area.

Every day, Kartik took the same route using transit to reach his work.

Kartik is survived by his parents and his younger brother.

The family has been informed by the Indian Embassy in Canada that the process of bringing back his body will take another six days.
