KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Nineteen dogs have been rescued by police after a resident in Kamloops, B.C., heard barking coming from a van parked at a hotel on Tuesday night.

RCMP say officers found five full-grown Labrador retrievers and 14 puppies inside the vehicle and no safety measures were taken to protect them during transport.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says a woman from Saskatchewan was issued a ticket for transporting the animals without protection.

The dogs have been turned over to the SPCA and Shelkie says the agency will investigate whether charges are warranted under animal protection legislation.
