14-year-old Nova Scotia swimmer makes swim across Northumberland Strait

The Canadian Press Darpan, 17 Aug, 2014 03:32 PM
BORDEN-CARLETON, P.E.I. - A 14-year-old Nova Scotia girl has become the youngest to complete an annual swim across the Northumberland Strait from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island.

Cali Bruce said on Sunday evening that the swim took her over six hours as she battled strong currents that swept her and an accompanying kayaker underneath the Confederation Bridge.

She says she raised over $11,000 in donations for the Brigadoon Village camp for children with chronic illnesses.

Bruce said she completed the 14-kilometre swim in honour of a cousin, Kevin Laffin, who died at the age of 15 from brain cancer.

Kerri Ann Hillier, Brigadoon's fund development officer, says 41 swimmers completed the crossing known as the Big Swim despite cold water and strong currents.

She says over $300,000 was raised for the camp, roughly double the original goal of the event.
