Workers Find Moulted Snake Skin In Drain As Reptile Eludes Capture In Victoria

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 23 Aug, 2016 12:41 PM
VICTORIA — Works crews in Victoria have extracted moulted skin from a storm drain where a stubborn corn snake has been hiding for several days.

The snake, estimated at about two metres in length, was discovered last week as workers checked the condition of a pipe near the downtown.

The reptile, identified as a non-venomous corn snake, was left in the drain over the weekend when it refused food and a warm shelter, which snake experts said were indications it was about to shed its skin.

The pipe was sealed so the snake could not escape, and dead mice were placed in the drain over the weekend to keep it fed until workers could figure out a way to extract it.

Moulting can take up to a week to complete.

Crews have previously said if efforts to lure out the snake don’t work, they may have to excavate the street as a last resort.
