Sharing the stories of inspirational South Asian Canadians is a wonderful way to celebrate their achievements and contributions to society. Through Darpan My Journey we hope to inspire others within the South Asian community and beyond, while also fostering a sense of pride and unity. This project's goal is to shine a light on diverse experiences, challenges overcome, and successes achieved, ultimately enriching the cultural landscape and promoting inclusivity.
The Gurpurab Radiothon, hosted by Surrey’s 93.1 RED FM, is the most successful one-day Radiothon where listeners support a hospital in Canada. It is held annually in celebration of the birthdate of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the Founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. The Sikh community celebrates this occasion with their donations. This is the 14th time that radio listeners have supported Surrey Hospitals Foundation through the Gurpurab Radiothon.
The ceremony was graced by the esteemed presence of Surrey Mayor; Brenda Locke, Counsel General of India in Vancouver; Mr. Manish, Anita Huberman; President & CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, Jashanpreet Singh; President of ISU; PICS Board members and other leaders of the society. The establishment of the ISU office signifies a milestone in PICS Society's commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for international students in British Columbia.
Neil Squire, who were named the Not-For-Profit Organization of the year at the recent Burnaby Business Excellence Awards, were delighted to host a great crowd at another successful Burnaby Board of Trade After Hours mixer held on November 9th. They welcomed nearly 100 guests through their doors, including Burnaby Board of Trade members, community members, and Neil Squire staff and supporters.
Bandi Chorh Divas, also known as Diwali for Sikhs, is a significant Sikh festival celebrated to honor Guru Hargobind Ji's release from imprisonment. In 1619, Guru Hargobind Ji refused to leave Gwalior Fort without the release of 52 Rajput kings who were unjustly imprisoned there. He negotiated their release, emphasizing the importance of standing up for the oppressed. This event signifies the triumph of righteousness over tyranny and the importance of freedom and justice.
Truly a global festival of light and unity, Diwali is vibrantly celebrated worldwide. The festival comes alive with enthusiasm and fervor in various parts of the world, each place adding its own unique customs and traditions to the grand spectacle.
The International South Asian Film Festival (iSAFF) concluded with a grand finale, showcasing remarkable films from Canada and beyond. iSAFF dedicated 2023 to celebrating ‘Pathbreakers’ with rich and diverse cinema selections including six feature films, four documentaries and over 30 short films, as well as dynamic industry events and innovative new initiatives.
